The Evergreen Valley High School community is a very diverse community with many talents. The diversity of the community is reflected in its vast number of clubs, many of which appeal to specific interests. One of these is the the EVHS Writing and Literature club, which has many contests for its fellow members, often with excellent prizes.
Spooktober, which was October’s writing contest, is one that has just been completed. This contest was for talented writers who were challenged to write two horror stories that would “scare your socks off”. The two prompts that they could pick from were “Take a childhood favorite and make it terrifying” or ‘A fate worse than death’.
The winner for this fourth annual contest contest is Olive Nguyen, a freshman. They were able to win a cash prize, as well as the role of writing master on the official WLC discord with their exemplary character creation and indulging plot based on the prompt of “A fate worse than death.” Here is the link to their winning submission: In the Mirror (spooktober contest submission!)
Olive has only been writing for a couple of years, but they were still able to achieve a lot. They say their main motivation for writing is “[to get] thoughts on paper and creating a diary of some sorts.” They hope to continue writing as a career path, whether it is by being a publisher of a newspaper or an author of a great series. In writing the piece that won them the title as Writing Master, they struggled to get a grasp of the new formatting. Overall, they remain proud of themself and their achievements.
Olive recommends authors like Rick Riordan and Edgar Allan Paul to gain inspiration from. Their favorite part of writing is when it is done and the relief washes over them.
The Writing Club is hosting a new poetry contest during the second semester. They are a welcoming and a great club that is looking for avid members. If you are not in a club or you want to try something new out, WLC might be the one for you.
